A May Day march for immigrant and workers’ rights is planned for Friday.
Organizers say more than 40 immigrant rights organizations, unions and social justice organizations will meet Friday at Lake Street and Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis at 2:30 p.m. They’ll then march downtown to the Hennepin County Government Center for a 5 p.m. rally.
They say they’ll also be joined by students who are planning a “Black Lives Matter” walkout from school that day. A Facebook page says students plan to leave school at 10:30 a.m., hold a noon rally at Martin Luther King Jr. park in Minneapolis, then join the immigrant and workers march.
The marchers say they have four themes for this year’s annual march: respect, dignity, justice and equality.
Their list of specific demands, which they say will help help unions, workers, Latino immigrants as well as immigrants and communities of other nationalities, and the African American community:
- Legalization and equality for all
- Drivers license for all
- $15 an hour and a union
- No anti-union “right to work” laws
- No racist police or ICE repression of our communities
- No more militarization of our borders, streets & barrios
- Fair trade not ‘free trade’
- No destruction of our environment
