Franken and McCain 'debate' during Vikings-Cardinals pre-game show

Prior to Thursday night's NFL game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Arizona Cardinals, former "Face the Nation" host Bob Schieffer acted as moderator during a humorous bit featuring Sen. Al Franken and Sen. John McCain. As each senator defended their respective home-state team, the dialogue devolved into insults and name-calling, with Franken declaring McCain a "loser" and McCain, in turn, denouncing Franken as a "liberal commie socialist."

Sen. Al Franken appeared on The Daily Show Monday night and sort of thanked host Jon Stewart for engaging young people in the political process.

Franken said to Stewart at the start of the 14 minute spot: "You have taken this platform, and by the dint of your hard work, your judgment, your intellect, you have engaged a generation of young people in public policy and politics — not enough to get them to vote, but enough to get some of them to Rock the Vote parties."

Franken talked about his experiences in the Senate, saying he's been able to work with his Republican colleagues to get some things done there.

"You reach common ground on certain things but there is a fundamental difference between Democrats and Republicans. We believe America does better when there's a strong middle clsss."

He said some of his colleagues in the Senate, maybe not a lot of them, can be funny. "But not one does physical schtick."

They were serious for a while, talking about the unraveling of the big telecommunications merger, and a bill he's trying to pass that would protect LGBT students from bullying at school.

"It's really hard to see you grown up like this. I'm sorry, It's really nice. I like it," Stewart said at the end.

Following a lunch of turkey burgers at the Minnesota State Capitol, Rep. Ron Erhardt, DFL-Edina, gave a floor speech wearing a lab coat and stethoscope to discuss the avian flu epidemic affecting Minnesota turkeys. Following numerous point of order interruptions by other members denouncing the speech's content, Erhardt was forced to cease when the House adjourned. The representative later apologized for attempting to make light of the crisis.

Wednesday night in St. Paul, Bob Dylan paid tribute to ailing rocker Bobby Vee by performing Vee's hit "Suzie Baby." (Vee was in the crowd that night.) Vee hired Dylan, then Bob Zimmerman, in the late 1950s to play piano in his band. After a few small gigs in North Dakota, the idea of lugging around a piano on tour didn't appeal to Vee, so he gave Dylan $30 and sent him on his way.

The signs calling for income equality are back up again at The People's Plaza (also known as Hennepin County Government Center) in Minneapolis. Occupy MN went to court and got a temporary restraining order preventing Hennepin County from removing the signs.

Local photographer T.C. Worley teamed up with Art Director Tony Franklin to produce a short documentary on Minneapolis frame builder Erik Noren of Peacock Groove Custom Cycles. From the creators:

“Deep Custom” was conceived when Art Director Tony Franklin (of publicconvoy.com) and Photographer T.C. Worley (studiobluempls.com) decided to collaborate on a personal project together. Believing their best creations were those unpaid “labor of love” jobs, they embarked to construct something born of passion, and not monetary gain.

Erik Noren, owner of Peacock Groove Custom Cycles was the clear choice for the film’s subject as he embodied this same passion in his bicycle building. No vacations, few days off and even moving into his parents home for a time were all sacrifices he has been willing to make to keep his small shop afloat.

The duo spent the better part of the Summer 2011 filming on weekends and in their free time. A strong theme of giving surrounds this film, as each side contributed time and talent to make this project a success.

This was their first motion project together, but will not be their last. Look for their new production company RoyalAntler to be born soon.

The first ever winter bike expo was a phenomenal success with over 3000 in attendance. Folks from across the country made the trip to Minneapolis, Minnesota to attend this one of a kind expo/demo/educational event. The hardiest attendees stayed around for the grand finale: the fat tire crit. What initially looked like a snow-free day turned into a nice fluffy snow pack by race time. Minnesota mountain bike legend, Brendan Moore, earned the overall victory, followed by Fast Freddy Millls and helmet cam rider, Jake Helmbercht. Watch closely at 5:20 where Jake makes his move to usurp the Freewheel Bike throne by nearly running over shop owner, Kevin Ishaug, who crashed hard on the skinny log ride. This footage is the first lap of the 5 lap race. Of course Murphy's law, and a low battery, kept the most fantastic moments (fire jumps, wheelies, burnouts, and war wounds) from being caught on video.

"Shot on location in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness of Northern Minnesota, September 2011.

The Pagami Creek Fire grew ten times in size on our first day in the park. Although we were some 40 miles away, we could see the plume and received significant smoke and weather from the resulting pyrocumulonimbus formation. Most of the hail, snow, rain, and wind we experienced was not captured in my footage for obvious reasons, but it was some of the strangest weather I've ever seen. On our way out we encountered a number of closed portages and soon realized we had been largely alone in the wilderness for some three days, not realizing the scale to which the fire had grown over the course of the week we were out."

It's never too early to start thinking about Northern Spark 2012. From Northern Spark:

Northern Spark is a new Minnesota festival modeled on a nuit blanche or “white night” festival — a free, dusk to dawn participatory public art event in both Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Northern Lights and more than 60 partner organizations presented 100 installations and performances by more than 200 artists in over 34 locations throughout the Twin Cities for Northern Spark 2011.

Over 50,000 visits took place to one or more of the events during the arc of the evening — from the top of Minneapolis’ Foshay Tower to the banks of Harriet Island in Saint Paul.

Organized and presented by Northern Lights.mn (northern.lights.mn), a non-proft art agency that presents innovative art in the public sphere, the goal of Northern Spark is not to take over the night like a giant big top tent, but to join it.

This is a drum kit robot that I designed and built out of salvaged materials. It is controlled by an Arduino development board and run off of a 12V battery. The current design allows for up to 7 different beats to be programmed and switched with a system of binary switches. The speed of the beat can be adjusted with a potentiometer.

The Brass Messengers of Minneapolis, MN, formed from the annual rubble of of the Heart of the Beast Mayday Parade and Ceremony in Minneapolis. Each year, the parade came and went, puppets packed, park cleaned, summer began and the founding members of the BMers left feeling like our work was unfinished, again. Having compiled years of mobile brass scores for ourselves, we took to making it an ongoing affair. Now we dine together (playing music), we take the train (playing music), bike (carrying our instruments, singing), camp (playing music), and bring the party wherever we end up. We started as a street band playing the music of the Carribean (Ska) and Balkans (Fanfare Ciocarlia), but now play anywhere from the small stages of local bars, where we have throw a country song to the crying drinkers, to Northeast Minneapolis, where a high speed polka or two is essential, to parties for kids, where we get to run in circles with many small children (that is the brass band dance for the under 6 crowd), to gatherings of our activist kin, where a fiery Bella Ciao prepares us for the mean world out there, to the big stage, where we try to play in tune. Our music of choice is anything that fits in the twisted brass tubing, from originals to “covers” from around the globe, as long as it makes a joyful noise.

We have played on Lake Street in Minneapolis, in Powderhorn Park, on 13th Street NE, Cross Lake, Minnesota, Hammond, Wisconsin, etc…. We have also played the stages of the Fiztgerald Theater in St. Paul, The First Avenue, Cedar Cultural Center, Minnesota State Fair, Walker Art Center, Orpheum Theater and earlier this summer, Megan’s Birthday Party.st.
